Frenemies
Parenting a teenager can indeed be quite challenging, wouldn't you agree? As a counsellor specializing in adolescents, I've encountered a wide range of issues that teens face daily and will be sharing some of my insights on my blog page. From managing stress and navigating peer influences to grappling with deeper concerns like depression or substance use, the teenage years are filled with complexities.
One particular challenge many teens encounter is navigating friendships, including those with "frenemies." These are friends who may sometimes act friendly but also exhibit behaviours that are less than supportive or even hurtful at times. Understanding and managing these relationships can be especially difficult for teenagers as they learn to differentiate between genuine friendships and those that may not be as healthy or positive.
In my experience, creating an environment where teens feel heard and supported is crucial. When they feel understood and valued, they are more likely to open up about their friendships and seek guidance on how to navigate these dynamics. Building trust and providing a non-judgmental space allows teenagers to explore their relationships and develop strategies for maintaining healthy friendships while setting boundaries with those who may not have their best interests at heart.
If you're interested in learning more about how to support your teenager through these challenges, I've attached two blog articles that explores this topic further. It offers practical insights and strategies that may be useful as you navigate the complexities of parenting a teenager especially when it comes to managing relationships with frenemies.
